What Happens in Venice…
I took the early train (6 am or so) from Triest to Venezia SL, reaching there just a few minutes before Caroline. It was great to meet each other. We were booked on a small hotel near a beach on Lido de Venezia and spent 4 nice days, three of these on the beach, one in Venedig. As this is a biking blog, I will apply the motto “What happens in Venice, stays in Venice”…:).
In the evening of the 11th, Caroline headed back to Vienna and I took a train to the city of Verona. By doing so, I was skipping nice towns (which I had visited earlier on yet another trip to Tuscany) such as Vicenza and Padua, but you have to make some trade-offs somewhere. Again, the main motivation for the train was to avoid the flat, rather boring terrain surrounding these otherwise wonderful cities.
Somewhere in the outskirts of Verona, I found a B&B for Eur 40. About a decade ago, such a stay would have cost Eur 25 or so – the price of accommodation, especially in the summer, has definitely crept up. The next cheapest hotel would have been above Eur 100…
While I had an entire floor to myself, I cannot recommend B&B Samuel, not even for the price of Eur 40. It is right next to the train track – and once I had slumbered away, the first passing express train gave me the shocks – I really (really!) thought an earthquake was coming…It took me quite a while to doze off again.
